25 Songs: The Music Issue

The New York Times Magazine

Every year, the critics of The New York Times select 25 songs and artists that represent the main trends in music and create a list of essays about them.

Sound plays a big role in the digital design of the issue. Using Spotify’s API, readers can play a preview of each song, transitioning between them as they scroll. It’s like the written version of a mix-tape!

The first version of the issue in this format was released in 2016 and became a success. It set the precedent for following versions.
